Decorations of Hanok

  • In hanok, the decoration differs greatly depending on the purpose of the building and it is an important factor in hanok appreciation. In palace architecture and Buddhist architecture, splendid decorations can be found, but in Confucian architecture that emphasizes moderation and justification, a concise appearance without decorations is seen. Also, housekeeping houses in the Joseon Dynasty were relatively simple in decoration due to the housing law. In the Joseon Dynasty, according to the Confucian ideology, a system was implemented to limit the size and decoration of houses by status. As a result, the use of polished stones was not allowed in general housekeeping houses and bracket sets were placed on the pillars to prevent decoration, and paintwork was also prohibited.

  • Paintwork

For palaces and temples, paintwork was used to reveal the monumentality of the building and explain the world view. It also played a role in enhancing the durability of wood.

    Panelled ceiling

Among the ceilings for decoration, the most representative is the paneled ceiling. It is a checkered ceiling with panels. It was installed in the most important buildings such as palaces and palaces.

    Windows and doors

The front and rear of a hanok are mostly composed of windows and doors, so they are an important decorative element in a hanok. The windows and doors are similar in shape, but can be distinguished by the presence or absence of a wainscot under them. Since the window paper is attached from the inside of the building, it creates a bright and glamorous atmosphere indoors, and the pattern of the grate can be appreciated from the outside. In temples, the grate is decorated with floral patterns.
